Why Screen Free Time?

Becoming a mother seems to have successfully brought out every ounce of guilt that’s in my pores.

Do you feel the same? It’s like no matter what…..BOOM, there’s the guilt, lurking around every corner just waiting for me.

I banned the word “busy” from my vocabulary and spent the past few years simplifying our lives, and I feel like things are so. much. better.

but there were still a lot of days when I wasn’t taking the time to CONNECT with my children.
I felt like I wasn’t getting that QUALITY time with them (especially on weeknights).

Evening hours with my family are SUPER important to me, but, they are also my HARDEST time of day.
In addition to everyone being tired after a long day, my husband and I are also attempting to prepare a healthy meal and all sit down at the table together.

There’s A Time For Screens

Screens play a really important role in our world. I believe there are many benefits of using screens, such as:

helping with homework (games and apps for math, science and reading)
learning about the world
staying connected with family and friends

However I feel that balance and moderation are the keys to success with screens and screen time in general. Not just for my children but also for MYSELF (and changing our own habits is always the hardest part, right?)

Screen Free Time Is For The Whole Family

I don’t know about you, but when I’m tired, I find it so hard to be creative, and it’s so easy to just go the simple route and turn on the TV for the kids, or mindlessly stare at the glowing screen on my phone, because then I don’t have to think….or do….or feel.

It’s EASY, but most of the time it doesn’t FEEL right, and out creeps that guilt again.

So, I came up with a plan.

I decided that the solution is to make screen free time easy for myself and my family and turn screen free time into a routine. No thinking. Very little preparation.

We have chosen to have screen free time in the afternoons when we get home (I have lots of activity suggestions below), and also plan special “screen free days” on the weekend (about once a month or so) where we can focus on spending time together as a family.

Planning Your Screen Free Time: Summary

1. Put It In The Calendar
Having set times for screen free activities helps makes it easier to follow-through and be consistent with your screen-free schedule.

2. Prepare Your Children In Advance

Talking about your screen free time in advance can really help your children be prepared and prevent negative attitude around screen free activities. I prep my 7 and 3 year old to know when screens will and won’t be allowed.

3. Make A Plan

Make screen free time FUN! Plan fun activities and things to do together as a family. See some of my suggestions below.

4. Tell Important People About Your Screen Free Time

I encourage everyone in the family to be screen free and that includes phones. If there are people who might be trying to reach you during your family time, it’s a great idea to let them know in advance “hey, I won’t have my phone nearby on Sundays because it’s family time…if you need to reach me in an emergency, do X”

Screen Free Time For Kids: Activity Ideas

Go for a Family Walk or Hike – My children LOVE exploring. It’s so easy, and doesn’t cost a thing. Find some nature near you and explore. I am always amazed at how much learning my daughter does while we are hiking (leadership, safety, counting, observing, wellness and more!)
Build Together with Legos or Blocks
Play Board Games – some family-recommended games for younger children include Trouble, Uni, Connect 4, and Guess Who.
Do Age-Appropriate Puzzles Together
Go To The Playground or a nearby Park
Build A Fort
Try A Science Experiment
Go To The Library – bonus, find out if your local library has a free storytime. We love going to our local library
Make homemade cards or write a kindness note
Bake or cook together – even really young children love to be “kitchen helpers”
Visit friends
Make your own play dough
Play dress up and use your imagination
Make puppets or shadow puppets
Make a collaborative family painting – have everyone paint on the same piece of paper or canvas
Read together
Paint Faces
Look at Family Photos Together – my children love to look at our photo albums and at their baby pictures
Help Out Around the House – my 3 year old loves helping with laundry and my 7 year old loves helping with cleaning (squirt/spray bottle fun), if they ENJOY doing tasks, let them help!
Have a fancy tea party
Make a Craft
Plant Some Seeds
Take Silly Photos of Each Other
Go To Your Local Farmer’s Market
Build Something From A Cardboard Box – use your imagination – a house, a car, a spaceship – the sky is the limit!

If I asked you, “what’s your favourite moment with your child”…what would you say?
I asked myself this question earlier today and it brought up all kinds of emotions, because you know what?

I wasn’t sure of the answer.

Summer is almost here (or if you are lucky, it has already arrived!)

For me, Summer is a time to really slow things down and be more present. I’ve been thinking about Summer and the ways we can all still enjoy the slower pace, with a little bit of learning thrown in for good measure!

1. Take part in the Kids Summer Postcard Exchange

Postcards are an easy and fun way for kids to exchange snail mail. Come on over to the International Kids Pen Pal group and match up with another parent to exchange a postcard this Summer. I’m super excited about this one – we can’t wait to match up with families around the world, and send and receive some postcards!

4. Make a Summer Bucket List

Every Summer, NJ and I write a list of fun things that she wants to do. We get a very short Summer season here, so we have to make the most of it!

Her wish list is always so simple, beautiful and filled with childhood wonder. Things like:

go to the playground
pick flowers
have a picnic
buy an ice cream from the ice cream truck
run through the sprinkler

I’ll be sharing things from our list on Facebook and Instagram, so be sure to follow along.

My tip: Don’t forget to include some library outings on your Summer bucket list. Reading is such a great way to start or end Summer days, and great for a rainy day activity.

5. Be Present For Your Kids

I’m making a pact with myself this Summer. No screen time for me between the time I come home from work and the time the kids go to bed. I’m going to have my kids help me stay accountable.

It’s Summer – we’ve got postcards and books and bucket lists to get to.

Every week (or so, because..life) I’ll share pictures, or short video reviews of books that we are reading from both our home collection AND the library.

I wanted to come up with some really practical, creative non-toy ideas that are a little more specific.

5 Non-Toy Gifts: Ideas and Inspiration For Kids

Non-Toy Gift 1: New Outfit Experience

Take the special child in your life shopping for a new outfit. The important part here is that you make it an experience that you do TOGETHER. I do this with my daughter every year for her birthday and it’s so much fun! We go to a store and she gets to pick out a brand new outfit, but we turn the shopping day into an experience. I think this would work well with nieces and nephews, grandchildren, and even close family friends!

Non-Toy Gift 2: A New Sleeping Bag and a Flashlight

Does this seem like a strange gift idea to you? We use our sleeping bags for camping together as a family BUT our children also LOVE using their sleeping bags when they play pretend, when they build forts and when we watch movies together during family time. In my experience, this is a great gift idea that provides endless hours of play!

My daughter NJ is learning to read right now, and I have to be honest, sometimes it’s a challenge. She LOVES being read to, we read together every night, but she is less motivated to read on her own. As a solution, I created this set of free sight word flashcards to help her make reading fun.

There are many ways to use your flashcards, here are just a few suggestions:

hole punch and put them on a ring for practice.
cut them out, lay them on the table or floor “memory game style” (face down) and say each word as you turn the card over.
lay out your flashcards (face up), find a flashlight and say each word as you shine the light on it.
